ABOUT SHIATSU

Shiatsu translates as “finger pressure” and originates in Japan. It is a bodywork that draws on Traditional Chinese Medicine, and has developed to include more recent Western techniques as well. It uses the meridian system and acupressure points, and is underpinned by the Theory of the 5 Elements. The meridian system is a network of pathways and points in the body where our vital energy, Ki, (Chi, Qi), flows. The Theory of the 5 Elements represents our relationship with the environment we live in - with nature, the food we eat, and the seasons. This relationship is reflected in our state of health. Shiatsu uses touch for diagnosis and treatment. Touch is a powerful way to connect and is the most basic and instinctive form of medicine. When given consciously, respectfully and with empathy, the body responds positively. Shiatsu is a powerful way to work with difficulties or discomfort in our physical and emotional selves. It addresses the imbalance in the flow of Ki - which can present as pain, tension or disease, as well as with deeper emotional issues - by working with the body as a whole. Shiatsu works with the energy of the body, revealing where support is needed, and providing that support by following the body's own directions. In this way each treatment is unique, organic, powerful, and often surprising.

WHY YOU MIGHT NEED SHIATSU

You may be looking for help with physical or emotional symptoms. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular treatments can alleviate stress, illness, and maintain health and well-being. Physical symptoms such as lower back pain, neck pain, joint stiffness, low energy, poor sleep quality, and chronic fatigue all respond well to Shiatsu. Shiatsu is a way of supporting you in emotional healing too. Stress, (and related disorders), suppressed emotions, and trauma are held in the body and affect the flow of Ki. If Ki doesn’t flow freely, it can impact on wellbeing, and eventually harden into physical pain. By creating change and adapting to life’s demands we can heal and build resilience.
